Insitunearinfrared(NIR)spectroscopyisperformedsimultaneouslywithautomaticcontinuousonlinemonitoringofpolymerizationreactions(ACOMP)duringmethylmethacrylatepolymerization.ACOMPisanabsolutetechniquethatfurnishesweightaveragemolecularmassMw,intrinsicviscosity,monomerconversion,andothercharacteristics,whereasNIRfurnishesmonomerconversiondataviaanempiricalcalibration.AnadvantageofinsituNIRisthatitfurnishesimmediateinformationontheconversioninthereactor,whereasACOMPreliesoncontinuouswithdrawalanddilutionofasmallstreamofreactorfluid,sothatthereisalagtimeofseveralminutesbetweenwhatACOMPreportsandwhatisoccurringinthereactor.SimultaneousmonomerconversiondatafrominsituNIRandACOMP,thelatterderivedfrombothrefractiveindexandUVabsorption,arecomparedandfoundtobeingoodagreement.TheevolutionofconversionkineticsandMwgenerallyconformtothepredictionsoftheQuasi-SteadyStateApproximation.Havingestablishedtheagreementbetweenthemethods,thepathisnowopenforcombiningNIRwithACOMPtocharacterizeincreasinglycomplexsystems,suchascopolymerizationwithtwoormoremonomericspecies,thatarenotfeasiblebyeithertechniqueseparately.
