Oxygen-transferenhancementhasbeenobservedinthepresenceofcolloidaldispersionsofmagnetite(Fe3O4)nanoparticlescoatedwitholeicacidandapolymerizablesurfactant.Thesefluidsimprovegas-liquidoxygenmasstransferupto6-fold(600%)atnanoparticlevolumefractionsbelow1%inanagitated,spargedreactorandshowremarkablestabilityinhigh-ionicstrengthmediaoverawidepHrange.Throughacombinationofexperimentsusingphysicalandchemicalmethodstocharacterizemasstransfer,itisshownthat(i)boththemasstransfercoefficient(kL)andthegas-liquidinterfacialarea(a)areenhancedinthepresenceofnanoparticles,thelatteraccountingforalargefractionofthetotalenhancement(80%ormore),(ii)theenhancementinkLmeasuredbyphysicalandchemicalmethodsissimilarandrangesfrom20to60%approximately,(iii)theenhancementinkLlevelsoffatananoparticlevolumefractionofapproximately1%v/v,and(iv)theenhancementinkLashowsastrongtemperaturedependence.Theseresultsarerelevanttoawiderangeofprocesseslimitedbythemasstransferofasolutebetweenagasphaseandaliquidphase,suchasfermentation,wastetreatment,andhydrogenationreactions.
