Lipid-conjugatedpolysaccharidevesiclesinnano-andmicro-scaleweredevelopedfromamphiphilicoctadecanol-modifieddextrans(OMD)preparedbypartialesterificationofdextranwithactivatedoctadecanol-carbamateimidazoleinawell-controlledmanner.Thecriticalaggregationconcentration(CAC)ofOMDadductsinaqueousphasevaries,dependingmainlyontheiroctadecanolcontents.ThroughsupramolecularassemblyoftheOMDadductscomprisingeither17or28mol%octadecanolresidueswithrespecttotheanhydroglucopyranoseunitsbythepartialsolventdisplacementtechniquewiththeinitialwatercontentofDMSO/H2Osolutionsbeyondacriticalpoint,stablenano-scaledOMDassembliesweredevelopedandcharacterizedbythevesicle-likemorphology.ThedimensionofpolymersomescanbeeffectivelycontrolledbytheOMDcompositionaswellastheinitialwatercontent.Ontheotherhand,micro-scaledOMDpolymersomescanbeachievedbythedoubleemulsiontechniqueinawater/oil/water(w1/o/w2)manner.BoththecontentsofNaClinaqueoussolutionasthew1phaseandofDMSOinDMSO/CHCl3co-solventsastheorganicphase,inwhichOMDwasdissolved,areofgreatimportanceincontrol领thepolymersomemorphologyandsize.Thesemicro-scaledOMDpolymersomewallsarecharacterizedbysize-selectivepermeabilitycapableofencapsulatinglargewater-solublecargoeswhileallowingtransportofsmallpolarspeciesacrossthemembrane,therebyrenderingtheseuniquecolloidalparticlesofpotentialapplicationsinbiomedicaltechnologies.
