Surface,InterfacialandAggregationPropertiesofSulfonicAcid-ContainingGeminiSurfactantswithDifferentSpacerLengthsJipingYang,JianyunXie,GuangmingChen,andXiaochenChenFoursulfonicacid-containinggeminisurfactants9BA-m-9BA(m=2,3,4,6),6,60-(ethane-1,2-diylbis(oxy))bis(3-nonylbenzenesulfonicacid)(9BA-2-9BA),6,60-(propane-1,3-diylbis(oxy))bis(3-nonylbenzenesulfonicacid)(9BA-3-9BA),6,60-(butane-1,4-diylbis(oxy))bis(3-nonylbenzenesulfonicacid)(9BA-4-9BA),and6,60-(hexane-1,6-diylbis(oxy))bis(3-nonylbenzenesulfonicacid)(9BA-6-9BA),weresynthesizedandcharacterizedbyFouriertransforminfrared(FTIR),1HNMR,elementalanalysis,andmeltingtemperaturemeasurements.Theirabilitytolowerthewatersurfacetensionandhexadecane/waterinterfacialtensionwasmeasuredandcorrelatedwiththehydrophobicityandlengthoftheiralkylspacerchain.Theiraggregatesinaqueoussolutionswereinvestigatedusingdynamiclightscatteringandtransmissionelectronmicroscopy.Sphericalvesiclescouldbefoundinaqueoussolutionsoffourgeminisurfactantswithanapparenthydrodynamicradius(Rh)of100nm.Thecriticalmicelleconcentration(cmc)offourgeminisurfactantsevaluatedbysurfacetensionmeasurementswas1orderofmagnitudesmallerthanthatofconventionalsingle-chainsurfactantsodiumdodecylsulfonate(SDS).AndtheirC20,thegeminisurfactantconcentrationrequiredforloweringthesurfacetensionofwaterby20mN/m,wasabout2ordersofmagnitudesmallerthanthatofSDS,showingexcellentefficiencyatreducingthesurfacetensionofwater.Inaddition,thehexadecane/waterinterfacialtensioncouldbelessthan1.0mN/mafterusingpure9BA-m-9BAinwater.Using9BA-6-9BAthehexadecane/waterinterfacialtensionwasreducedto0.21mN/m.
