摘要:Knowledgegapsinnanomaterialfateandtoxicitycurrentlylimittheabilityofriskassessmentstocharacterizetheenvironmentalimplicationsofnanomaterials.Thisproblemisfurthercomplicatedbythelackofstandardizedcharacterizationandpreparationmethodologiesforresearcherstogaintheneededinformationtoassistriskassessors.Inthepresentstudy,dataweregeneratedtodetermineifmultiwallednanotube(MWNT)fateandtoxicityarealteredbyengineeredsurfacemodificationsorbydifferentdispersalmethods.WhiledissolvedorganicmatterwasagooddispersingagentofMWNTsinwater,thehumicacidfractionwasamoreeffectivedispersantthanthefulvicacidfraction.Whenstabilizedinorganicmatter,thefunctionalgroupattachedtotheMWNTcontrolleditstoxicity.UnderivatizedMWNTsinducedrelativelymoderatetoxicitytoCeriodaphniadubiaafter96h(25±19%survivalat26mg/L),whilehydrophilicgroups(hydroxyl,carboxyl)reducedthistoxicity(93±12%survivalat48mg/L).However,otherfunctionalgroups(alkyl,amine)increasedtoxicity(0±0%survivalat<15mg/L).Indispersalmethodstudies,sonicationofMWNTsincreasedfragmentationrelativetomagneticstirring.ThesonicationtreatmentofMWNTsalsoslightlyreducedthemortalityofC.dubiainthewatercolumnbutincreasedtoxicityinthesedimenttoLeptocheirusplumulosusandHyalellaazteca.Findingsinthepresentstudyindicatethatnanotubesengineeredforspecificapplicationsneedtobemanagedindependentlyandthatlaboratorymethodstodisperseandtestnanotubesinbioassaysneedtobestandardizedtoobtainrepeatableresultsforcomparisonofmaterials.
