Background:TheinhibinbetaBsubunitjoinsthealphasubunittoformapituitaryFSHsecretioninhibitor.Inhibinhasbeenshowntoregulategonadalstromalcellproliferationnegativelyandtohavetumour-suppressoractivity.Inaddition,serumlevelsofinhibinhavebeenshowntoreflectthesizeofgranulosa-celltumorsandcanthereforebeusedasamarkerforprimaryaswellasrecurrentdisease.Becauseexpressioningonadalandvariousextragonadaltissuesmayvaryseveralfoldinatissue-specificfashion,itisproposedthatinhibinmaybebothagrowth/differentiationfactorandahormone.Furthermore,thebetaBsubunitformsahomodimer,activinB,andalsojoinswiththebetaAsubunittoformaheterodimer,activinAB,bothofwhichstimulateFSHsecretion.[providedbyRefSeq].
