我国种子加工机械发展较晚，70年代起从国外引进单机，并研学和仿制。80年代从国外引进种子加工成套设备，进行了研学和仿制。80年代后期，我国种子加工机械的科研及生产工作从引进、仿制、消化、吸收进入了自行开发研制、生产推广的快速发展时期，种子加工机械设备的试验研究和自行开发研制工作从单机到机组，再发展成种子加工成套设备。
通过消化吸收和开发创新，目前已研制出了一批比较适合我国国情的种子精选机、烘干机械和种子加工成套设备，并在生产中得到了普遍的推广应用。国内先后研制成功并逐步得到推广应用的有各种型号的风筛基本清选机、重力分选机、窝眼筒精选机、圆筒筛分级机、拌药包衣机等多种机型，同时又研制成功了多种机组和成套设备并较广泛地推广使用。
目前这些机型的性能和加工能力已满足不了日益提高的加工要求，其中部分主机除有振动大、寿命短的缺点外，能耗是国外同类产品的2～3倍。另外，国产种子加工机械绝大多数是国外样机的仿制产品，其性能已不如进口样机，国内各个生产厂家再互相模仿，优点和缺点被传来传去，很少有设计者去探索种子的特点，根据实际用途去改进机械，结果导致大同小异，有特殊加工需要的种子机械无处购置。工厂为了销售自己的产品，无论用户有什么样的要求，向工厂咨询时，得到的答复往往都是可以适用，以“不变应万变”，没有一个确切的种子实验数据。例如国外生产的种子包衣机采用电脑定量控制药种配比，包衣质量易保证，而国产种子包衣机均为翻斗式计量，精度低，包衣质量难以保证。此外，国外种衣剂质量高，包衣后的种子流动性不受影响，装袋后不会因水分增加而变质，而国产种衣剂含水量高，种子包衣后成膜慢、粘性大，影响流动性，装袋前需要干燥，否则极易变质。但国外无包衣种子干燥机，国内又处于空白，急需开发研制。
“九五”期间，国家利用贴息贷款和世界银行贷款投资，计划建设各类种子加工ZX1050个，其中半数需要加工能力为产量每小时5吨的大型粮食作物种子加工成套设备，因此国内用户不得不花比国产同类设备价格高7～8倍的价钱从国外引进设备。
西方发达国家的种子加工设备的发展已有近百年的历史，设备规格系列化，品种齐全，设备性能稳定，结构合理，工作可靠，设备生产专业化，制造工艺先进，设备耗能少，适应性强，种子加工成套设备的机械化、自动化程度高，设备的加工能力向大型化、超大型化发展，能很好地满足种子加工业的发展需要。如果我国再不抓紧时间，开发生产先进实用的国产种子加工机械，这个市场就会被外商占领。
国产设备出路何在经过近20年的努力，目前我国种子加工机械生产厂已发展到20多家，可生产11类120多种种子加工机械，可组成15种不同形式的种子加工成套设备。我国种子加工机械发展的技术关键是设计制造单位能够根据种子的特性，将机械加工艺与种子性能要求相结合，提高国产设备的质量，扩大市场占有量，实现设备的国产化。国产设备在价格上比进口设备有明显的优势，进口设备价格是国产的8～10倍，因此，我国种子加工机械如能在材质、制造工艺、技术性能和使用可靠性方面达到进口机组或单机的指标，即使价格提高1倍，其市场潜力也是很大的。
国家在很多省投入大量资金用于种子加工业，因此我国新的种子加工机械发展高潮已来临。在我国种子加工机械的发展有着广阔的前途，它能更快地提高种子质量，提高种子商品化进程和市场竞争能力，增加效益。提高种子加工机械质量，完善种子加工机械性能已成为生产厂家的新课题。
