Turbulence generated by wave breaking was investigated using a novel non-intrusive
measurement technique called bubble image velocimetry (BIV). The violent velocity field in the
highly aerated region of a broken wave was obtained using BIV. The mean velocity and turbulent
intensity were obtained by ensemble averaging 20 repeated measurements. It was found that the
maximum mean velocity reached 1.81C with C being the phase speed, occurred shortly after the first
impingement. The maximum turbulence intensity, however, occurred at the second impingement
induced by the first splash, reached 0.96C or 67% of the maximum mean velocity at that moment. 自适应粒子成像测速场仪(PIV)
