IntroductionElectrochemicalImpedanceSpectroscopy,EIS,isaverypowerfulwaytogaininformationaboutelectrochemicalsystems.Itisoftenappliedtonewelectrochemicaldevicesusedforenergyconversionandstorage(ECS),includingbatteries,fuelcells,andsuper-capacitors.EIScanbeusefulinallstagesofthedevelopmentofnewdevices,frominitialevaluationofhalf-cellreactionmechanismsandkinetics,toqualitycontrolofpackagedbatteries.IncreaseduseofECSdevicesinhigherpowerapplications(suchaselectricvehicles)hasledtodevelopmentofdeviceshavingverylowimpedance.UnfortunatelyforpractitionersofEIS,impedanceofmodernECSdevicesisoftensolowthatitcannotbeeasilyoraccuratelymeasuredusinglaboratoryEISsystems.MostcommercialEISsystemdonotworkwellwhenimpedanceisbelow0.1Ω.ThisApplicationNotedescribesaseriesofEISmeasurementsmadeonaLiionsecondarybatteryratedtohaveimpedancebelow500μΩat1kHz.Specialtechniquesareusedtoimprovetheaccuracyandfrequencyrangeofthisdifficultmeasurement.Ifyou'renewtoEIS,youmightwanttoreadGamryInstruments'BasicsofEISbeforereadingtherestofthisApplicationNote.InformationfoundinthisintroductiontoEISwillnotberepeatedhere.
