A new, novel Micro Reaction Calorimeter is described. Reaction calorimetry has applications in many areas of chemistry. A reaction calorimeter will measure heat output of chemical reaction you do or do not want (process optimisation and safety); kinetics of reaction and thermodynamics of reactions can be quantified. But, in addition, a reaction calorimeter will determine specific heat, heat of solution, heat of mixing. Solids, liquids or mixtures can be measured. Applications range from kinetic studies for process development to evaluation of catalysts or other additives; from stability of explosives to specific heat determination of heterogeneous mixtures. Pressure also can be measured. Until now, reaction calorimeters have been large glass vesselled instruments, have been of low sensitivity, slow in set-up and operation (1 test per day) and with a requirement often of 1 2 litres can cause hazard in operation or difficulty if sample availability is limited. Often commercially, they are very expensive.
A Micro Reaction Calorimeter overcomes all these issues. Application of the Micro Reaction Calorimeter is detailed in this paper.
