Our planet’s most habitable space is in the ocean, and about 80% of the livable volume isin the deep ocean below water depths of 1,000 m. As the oldest and largest biome on Earth, thedeep ocean contains a trove of microbial diversity with unique physiology, metabolism, andgenetic resources that provide ecosystem services of enormous values to the mankind. Thedeep-ocean microorganisms, and the communities they form, drive global biogeochemicalcycles, including those that regulate the Earth’s climate. The ocean is truly the final wildcommons and the deep ocean is the last terra incognita of the Earth.Climate change has taken place in geological past that led to ocean anoxic events (OAEs)and mass extinctions on Earth. For the first time in Earth’s history however, climate change isbeing driven by human forcing and proceeding at a pace that may outstrip evolutionary change.Climate change today is affecting the marine environment, inflicting ever-increasing pressureson marine microbiomes and ecosystems. This conference provides a platform for cross-disciplinary dialogue among microbiologists, biogeochemists, geobiologists, ecologists, and oceanographers, with the aim to advancefundamental understanding of bioresources and life processes in the deep ocean. Theconference organizing committee (COC) welcomes submissions on field, laboratory, andtheoretical studies that present new insight into the deep ocean microbiomes and ecosystems.Conference organizing committeeJiasong Fang, Shanghai Ocean University, ChianRulong Liu, Shanghai Ocean University, ChinaXi Yu, Shanghai Ocean University, ChinaNianzhi Jiao, Xiamen University, ChinaXiao Xiang, Shanghai Jiaotong University, ChinaYu-Zhong Zhang, Ocean University of China & Shandong University, ChinaXuewei Xu, Second Institute of Oceanography, Department of Natural Resources, ChinaZongzhe Shao, Third Institute of Oceanography, Department of Natural Resources, ChinaFederico Baltar, Shanghai Ocean University, China
