background:
Thisgeneencodesastromalcell-derivedalphachemokinememberoftheintercrinefamily.TheencodedproteinfunctionsastheligandfortheG-proteincoupledreceptor,chemokine(C-X-Cmotif)receptor4,andplaysaroleinmanydiversecellularfunctions,includingembryogenesis,immunesurveillance,inflammationresponse,tissuehomeostasis,andtumorgrowthandmetastasis.Mutationsinthisgeneareassociatedwithresistancetohumanimmunodeficiencyvirustype1infections.Multipletranscriptvariantsencodingdifferentisoformshavebeenfoundforthisgene.[providedbyRefSeq,May2013].
